Antony and the Johnsons and Metropole Orchestra

wednesday 11 july 2012
Gent Jazz Festival (Podium)
Antony Hegarty (Vocals), Anthony Weeden (conductor), Gaël Rakotondrabe (piano) & Metropole Orchestra

With his characteristic voice, Anthony Hegarty creates a complete own style and sound which made him able to win the public’s enthusiasm. His album ‘I am a Bird Now’ won all different kinds of prizes and made Antony a rather outrageous world star. During this concert, Antony will be accompanied by Metropole Orchestra.

Antony Hegarty was born in England and moved to the United States rather quickly. He ends up in New York where he makes his first steps in the theater industry. At the end of 1999, he founds the band Antony and the Johnsons. Their first album ‘Antony and the Johnsons’ already appeared in 2000, but it was an EP which came out later on that mainly attracted the attention of Lou Reed. Antony collaborated with Reed on the project ‘The Raven’, a project based on the work of Edgar Allen Poe. In 2005, when Antony recorded his second album ‘I am a Bird Now’, including numbers as ‘Hope There is Someone’ and ‘You are My Sister’, he convinced the rest of the world of his talent. The albums ‘The Crying Light’ and ‘Swanlights’ followed later on.

The key words of Antony’s work are: intimacy and beauty, which are represented in his art works and multiple projects and collaborations (Björk, Yoko Ono, CocoRosie, Boy George,…). Metropole Orchestra adds the icing on the cake; a unique concert performed by a unique artist!
This production was made possible together with Holland Festival.
