DJ: Big Train & White Jazz

8 july 2012
Gent Jazz Festival (DJ-toren festivalterrein)

Frank Hessens and Kurt Overbergh, both with an extreme passion for music, are the two brains behind the DJ Big Train & White Jazz concept. Overbergh is even artistic director of the Ancienne Belgique in Brussels. They want to separate the jazz genre with its context, a context which is associated with too much arrogance and snobbishness. “Hittin’ New Ears With 100% Jazz” is their new motto.

Not by referring to jazz funk from the period in which acid jazz was popular, but by focusing on the work of John Coltrane, Charlie Parker, Sonny Rollins, Cannonball Adderley, Eric Dolphy, Miles Davis, Charles Mingus or Thelonious Monk. A few strong chords remind you at the golden fifties, during which wonderful vocalists performed on stage. The voices of Billie Holiday, Sarah Vaughan and Ella Fitzgerald, named the ‘big three’, are often present during their DJ sessions.
