We’ll admit it: the air turned pretty blue when it was announced that Bobby Womack would be missing the Gent Jazz Festival last year. But now we can hardly contain our excitement about his concert at the Gent Jazz Festival this summer. His album ‘The Bravest Man in the Universe’ was on almost all of the best selling lists of 2012 and we haven’t stopped playing it yet.
Soul veteran, songwriter and guitarist Bobby Womack needs no introduction. He has had huge international hits with songs including ‘Across 110th Street’, more than earning his place in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. He has worked with icons such as James Brown, Aretha Franklin, Ray Charles, Wilson Pickett, Janis Joplin, Stevie Wonder, Rod Stewart… the list is endless. And with ‘It’s All Over Now’ he even wrote one of the Rolling Stones very first hits.
A few years ago, Bobby Womack popped up working with Gorillaz alongside Mos Def on the track ‘Stylo’. It seems that the collaboration with Damon Albarn was such a success that Albarn decided to co-produce Womack’s latest album. ‘The Bravest Man In The Universe’ came out in 2012 on hip record label XL Recordings and was produced by the label’s record boss, Richard Russell. Womack’s rich, soulful voice was beautifully supported by Albarn and Russell with an electronic edge as well as by contributions from artists such as Lana Del Rey and Fatoumata Diawara.
