Cécile McLorin Salvant
At barely 23, Miami-born singer Cécile McLorin Salvant is steadily conquering international audiences with her expressive interpretations and phenomenal vocal technique. In 2010 she won the Thelonious Monk Competition in Washington D.C. and since has performed with renowned artists such as Rodney Whitaker, Jacky Terrasson and Wynton Marsalis.
Salvant brings the standard repertoire with such ease, almost as if she grew up with those songs. However, she started to sing jazz at a music conservatory in France, where she had planned to study classical singing, but was inspired to sing jazz by her teacher, Jean-François Bonnel; in 2009 this culminated in the release of her first album with the Bonnel Quintet. Last year she featured on ‘Gouache’, the widely acclaimed album by Jacky Terrasson, with whom she will also be performing at Gent Jazz Festival. She is about to release her second album ‘Woman Child’, featuring renowned musicians including pianist Aaron Diehl.
