Dee Dee Bridgewater & Ramsey Lewis
Ever since the early 1970s, flamboyant singer and stage actress Dee Dee Bridgewater has been hailed as the successor to Ella Fitzgerald, not least because of her unmistakable sense of swing and impressive vocal talent. At the 2005 Gent Jazz Festival, the American jazz singer presented a programme of French ‘chanson’ classics and had the audience eating out of her hand. Armed with a natural stage presence, combined with a touch of pathos and drama, she is ready to capture any audience. She recently reprised the role of Billie Holiday in the biographical musical ‘Lady Day’; the same role she played in London and Paris in the 1980s.
Composer, pianist, three-time Grammy Award winner and radio personality Ramsey Lewis combines dynamic piano playing with hints of soul and funk. Through the music of his father’s church choir, he was exposed to music from an early age. Gospel and blues still form the basis for his funk-style music. Following the 1965 hit song “The In Crowd”, he began to focus more on pop and rhythm & blues.
Together, the two jazz legends dive deep into the grooves of soulful jazz and jazzy soul.
