The release of her album ‘When I Look in Your Eyes’ in 1999 turned jazz singer and pianist Diana Krall into a true jazz superstar. A Grammy Award winner, Krall is widely recognised as one of the leading jazz pianists of her generation. Her romantic songs, jazz standards and excellent originals appeal to both wide audiences as well as to jazz purists.
Her latest album, ‘Glad Rag Doll’ contains Krall’s own versions of forgotten vaudeville songs from the 20s. The album is filled with sensual songs ranging from nostalgic country to intense blues, equipped with producer T. Bone Burnett’s additional guitars and vigorous rhythms. Krall’s sultry voice sounds more raw and intense than ever in this engaging blend of jazz, country, blues and folk. The album cover features Krall posing as one of the sexy Ziegfeld girls, evoking a frivolous world that floats between fantasy and reality. Her live repertoire also includes her own interpretations of songs by Joni Mitchell, Tom Waits and husband Elvis Costello. With her acclaimed performance in Bozar in 2012 still fresh in our minds, we look forward to seeing her once again.
From a very early age, Krall was brought up on music by her father, a pianist with an extensive record collection. “My father had every record by Fats Waller and I tried to learn them all”, says Krall. “Jazz music entered my life through the high school swing band. They gave me Bill Evans albums. I already had Miles Davis’ ‘Kind of Blue’. I practised with the records of Miles and Ahmad Jamal for the use of space, with Bill Evans’ and some of Keith Jarrett’s for harmony. My piano playing is directly related to those jazz grooves, but my singing doesn’t stem from the jazz tradition, I tend to take a more narrative approach.”, the singer explains.
