José James is often described as a jazz singer for the hip hop generation, however, his music transcends all traditional genres. A charismatic performer gifted with an extraordinary voice, Jose James has the ability to create a sound that is elegant, reserved and seductive at once. A sensual gentleman whose stylish looks would fit just as easily in a 1950s jazz club or a polished HD music video. His duo performance with Belgian pianist Jef Neve at the 2009 Gent Jazz Festival led to the recording of ‘For All We Know’, a wonderful no-frills collection of iconic jazz standards.
On his new album ‘No Beginning No End’, Jose James digs deeper into the neo-soul genre, with the assistance of an impressive list of musical guests, including pianist Robert Glasper and bassist Pino Palladino. The album features a sultry, North African flavoured duet with French-Moroccan singer Hindi Zahra, and a remarkable, intimate song with songwriter and guitarist Emily King. His music combines a variety of influences stretching from Ray Charles and Marvin Gaye to Lou Rawls and Maxwell, but also flirts with the work of R&B innovators such as Frank Ocean. He brings feel good neo-soul/jazz, spiced with dub, rhythm ‘n’ blues and soft hip hop, where generous bass drums and dry, crackling snare drums set the tone. He brings minimalist hip hop à la J Dilla, his voice gliding over languid, sexually-charged funk, driven by fiery organs and trumpets. This is a singer with tons of charisma and with more soul than a gospel choir on the loose.
