It seems that LABtrio have been collecting prizes from their very beginnings. They had only just been established in 2007 when the trio won the Dexia Classics (2008), were voted best group at the Brussels Jazz Marathon in 2009 and they won both the jury and the public prizes at the Tremplin Jazz d’Avignon Festival in 2011. In the same year they played an extensive tour with the JazzLab Series.
The group name is an anagram of the members’ names. Drummer Lander Gyselinck is regarded as one of the key figures in young jazz. He plays just as well with Kris Defoort and Nicolas Thys as he does with the genre-crossing STUFF, which played last year at the Gent Jazz Festival (where he also received the Sabam Youth & Music Award). Like pianist Bram De Looze he sought further broadening experience in the international context of New York. Lander was even able to play with John Zorn in New York. Bassist Anneleen Boehme is praised for her feeling for swing and musicality. LABtrio plays standards and lays especially quirky improvisations over them with influences including hiphop and electronic music.
Their eagerly awaited debut album will be (finally) released later this year.
