Nicolas Thys trio
Belgian bassist Nicolas Thys graduated cum laude from the Hilversum Conservatory in 1993; the following year he repeated the same stunt, only this time for guitar. He took lessons with Dave Holland, Mark Helias and Marc Johnson, and finally moved to New York in 1999, searching for new experiences and challenges. He stayed for about eight years and quickly became a popular sideman, playing with artists from Bill Carrothers and Lee Konitz to Toots Thielemans.
Jeroen Van Herzeele played with Toots Thielemans, but also with Philip Catherine, Octurn, the Ben Sluijs Quartet, Mâäk’s Spirit, Kris Defoort’s Dreamtime and the Nathalie Loriers Quartet. Although John Coltrane’s last musical period serves as his main source of inspiration, he manages to translate this influence into his own distinctive idiom.
The two musicians have been playing together for years, for instance in the original Nicolas Thys Trio in 2003, which accounts for their cohesive and well-oiled sets.
