This London-based British-Danish jazz trio distinguishes itself through catchy themes, solid compositions and swinging grooves. Their second album ‘Green Delay’ (2009) received wide critical acclaim and ‘Alive’ (2010) was named album of the year by Mojo. With ‘Walking Dark’ (2012), Phronesis have confirmed their status as one of the most exciting bands on the British jazz scene today. For all this hard work, they were awarded the London Jazz Award.
Their exciting melodies and rhythms and dense ensemble sound have also earned them a strong live reputation. The tight interplay between the three instruments gradually builds to powerful climaxes, while their layered music with often mesmerising bass grooves also allows room for humour, lyricism and free improvisation.
The band was founded in 2005 by Danish bass player Jasper Høiby, who has been living and working in London for several years. Høiby was a key figure in the London Loop Collective, a network created by and for young jazz musicians. The name Phronesis comes from a term used by the Greek philosopher Aristotle to describe the rational process behind ethical and deliberate actions. Although this might suggest a more cerebral approach, the band’s actual purpose is to try and captivate the audience with melodically and rhythmically infectious music.
