Raphaël Imbert Quartet
French saxophonist Raphaël Imbert is best known for the adventurous albums that he recorded with Gerald Cleaver and Joe Martin: ‘N_Y Project’ (2009) and ‘Live Au Tracteur’ (2011). His compositions are strongly influenced by research he carried out during 2003 in New York on the influence of sacred music in jazz. His music is laced with references to Sun Ra, John Coltrane, Albert Ayler and Pharoah Sanders.
He will be bringing his Suite Élégiaque to the Gent Jazz Festival, which is based upon the Newtopia Project that he began in 2006 with pianist Yaron Herman and saxophonist Zim Nqgawana, who passed away last year. Imbert will be bringing double-bass player Simon Tailleu and drummer Cedrick Bec, who also worked on the project in 2006 (and makes up part of the Yaron Herman Trio). The young pianist, Enzo Carniel completes the quartet.
