ZORN AT 60
John Zorn (1953) saxophonist, composer, conductor and producer will turn sixty on 2 September. To celebrate that birthday, he developed a complete programme, together with musician friends, under the name “Zorn at 60”. With this project he will be showcasing a tantalising selection from his projects on 14 July at the Ghent Jazz Festival, a unique musical experience reflecting the diversity and enthusiasm of one of the most talented musicians of his generation.
Apart from the entire day of music dedicated to John Zorn’s 60th birthday, there is also an exposition to visit: Obsessions Collective.
As part of the ‘Zorn at 60’ festivities, the Walker Art Center (Minneapolis, USA) asked several artists, writers and musicians their reflections on John Zorn. This resulted in some great words like ‘visionary’, ‘mensch’, ‘dude’, ‘wild man’, ‘iconoclast’ and ‘dreamer’.
Mike Patton (vocals), Jesse Harris (vocals), Sofia Rei (vocals), John Medeski (piano), Trevor Dunn (bass), Kenny Wollesen (vibraphone), Marc Ribot (guitar), Joey Baron (drums), Cyro Baptista (percussion), John Zorn (conductor).
To celebrate his sixtieth birthday, Zorn asked a number of his favourite songwriters such as Mike Patton, Jesse Harris, Sean Lennon and Laurie Anderson to create texts for the compositions from his catalogue. They are performed by an all-star ensemble comprising companions from over the many years and are sung by Mike Patton and Jesse Harris. The programme includes music from Naked City, Masada, The Dreamers, Moonchild, Nova Express and others. In their midst Zorn serves up his stunning instrumental pieces. This project is a very special retrospective that performs some of his most lyrical and memorable compositions from the past thirty years.
