Eric Thielemans’ Bike Snare Bass

Jazz drummer / percussionist / performer Eric Thielemans creates sound sculptures on a concert bass drum, a snare drum and a bicycle wheel. It is all about compositions on overtones, hypnotic drones, gamelanesque primitive beats and a minimum of sound objects.

Project Frederik Croene/Timo van Luijk

At first sight, classical pianist Frederick Croene and autodidact Timo van Luijk seem to be each other’s opposites: Croene enjoyed academic education and plays, besides the contemporary repertory, works of Mozart, Beethoven and Schumann. Timo van Luijk (co-founder of the increasingly legendary 'Noise Maker's Fifes') makes organic, intuitive music under the name of Af Ursin and as a member of the collective Onde and he does this by using found objects and discarded musical instruments. For this performance, he also brings a collection of: brass, percussion instruments, a rusty bicycle pump, an old violin which he plays by using a record turner,... Together, they build an installation of discarded pianos, which they will explore and play as one big instrument. This "metapiano” is the instrument around which both musicians will move and surrounded by the scent of obsolete traditions, they seek a spontaneous approach to the sound. This production was made possible thanks to Joost Fonteyne and the Happy New Ears Festival 2008.
