The Jungle Boldie consists of three of Holland’s most renowned jazz musicians: Tony Overwater, Maarten Ornstein and Wim Kegel. They have the shared vision of what it is to play and perform ‘free’ music in the true sense of the word - creating a joyful interplay without any assumptions. The band just released a great album: Jungle Boldie.

The three musicians met at the Royal Conservatory in the Hague during their studies and have been playing together ever since, sometimes using another name. Jungle Boldie started out as the Maarten Ornstein Trio and was founded in 1989. In 2000 they renamed themselves the Tony Overwater Trio and created an international stir when they released their first album OP - a tribute to bassist Oscar Pettiford. The album featured flugelhorn player Ack van Rooyen and cellist Ernst Reyseger and won the 2001 Edison Award for Best Dutch Recording (Dutch Grammy).

Jungle Boldie is the result of a long friendship and cooperation. All their experiences, their travels and inspiration come together in the new music of the trio. It is self-willed world jazz, music that looks like nothing else but at the same time evokes a lot of things.

In 2005 the trio joined forces with the highly acclaimed Dutch classical reed quintet Calefax to play two suites by Duke Ellington: the famous Far East Suite and the lesser-known River Suite. The project was remarkable not only because of the crossover between classical music and jazz and the choice of repertoire, but also for the fine arrangements made for this particular line up which, unusually, does not feature piano. Over the years, the group performed with many international artists including Pat Metheny, Ilse de Lange, Ack van Rooyen, Calefax, and David Murray – to name but a few.

Maarten Orstein is a reed player and composer who has mastered both (bass)clarinet and tenor saxophone. He is famous for his distinctive sound and contributions to modern jazz and improvised music. Maarten studied eastern European Music and Indian music and collaborates with a wide array of musicians in Holland and Europe composing highly original pieces of music. His work stretches from classical ensembles to pop groups, as well as theatre projects including Orkater and his own group DASH!

Tony Overwater is an award winning bass player whose sound and own way of playing have established him as a key player in the European Jazz world. He is a remarkable solo performer and leader of his own projects but also a collaborative and attentive sideman. Tony plays a wide variety of musical styles, and is particularly known for his pioneering work with Arab music with Rima Khcheich.

Wim Kegel is considered one of Holland’s most prominent jazz drummers. He has developed a unique style combining traditional jazz drumming with a very progressive, contemporary and personal approach. Wim studied North African percussion and Indian music. He plays with the Tilmar Junius Trio and Special Delivery.
