band

Kristof  Roseeuw (bass, vocals), Lode Vercampt (cello, vocals), Philippe Thuriot (accordion, vocals), Tom Wouters (clarinet, percussion, vocals).

The band with the amusing and yet bizarre name radioKUKAorkest was formed in 2005. Bass player Kristof Roseeuw was asked by the Flemish radio station Klara to compose an ensemble with new compositions and perform them during their live broadcasts. Four versatile musicians blend into an intimate and sometimes boisterous quartet.

Vocalist Kristof Roseeuw is also a well known member of Flat Earth Society and many other bands. RadioKUKAorkest was asked to play during a live television show, ‘De Kunstkaravaan’. Roseeuw tried to form a fluid and alert chamber ensemble. Calling upon accordionist Philippe Thuriot, percussionist/ clarinetist Tom Wouters (FES, Kamikaze) and cellist Lode Vercampt (Kris Defoort Quartet, Brick Quartet) to join him, Roseeuw began RadioKUKAorkest . The quartet definitely signed up for chamber music but performed with an undeniable rock ‘n’ roll attitude.

These four guys make up a caustic team on the boundary of jazz and classical music. It is not easy to label their music as a single genre. World music, classical music, pop and improvisation are fused together to create catching and unexpected timbres.

In 2007 they released the album 'Songs For Broadcast'. The show ‘De Kunstkaravaan’ toured and was showcased at several exhibitions. At the end of their journey they had fourteen pieces of music, mainly original compositions but also arrangements for music by Erik Satie and the American bass player Michael Formanek. Hefty, boyish pieces alternated with rather meditative songs. Both melancholy and joviality can be found in RadioKUKAorkest’s music. The four musicians manage to find each other easily yet the individuals clash creatively as well.
