In addition to working as a musician, Brussels resident Adja is also a theatre maker, a combination which she manages to fuse in what she herself describes as 'sophisticated soul in a hybrid concert format’. This comes out as music that sits on the crossroads of soul, gospel and jazz. Yet by adding in various sensorial perceptions, such as smell and visuals, the artist is keen to lend the narrative nature of her music added oomph. In doing so, she is endeavouring to express her inner world and the feelings we all experience as articulately as possible.
In 2021, Adja was singled out as one of the laureates of Soundtrack, the music competition staged by VI.BE and the Clubcircuit. Along with her regular arranger, guitarist and life partner Alexis Nootens. It put her in the spotlight and, on 24 February last, she released her debut EP 'IRONEYE’ through Sdban Ultra, the Belgian label that also has STUFF., John Ghost and TaxiWars on its roster. Adja is a super talent, a force of nature with a stage presence and a warm timbre that is reminiscent of artists such as Erykah Badu, Solange and Lianne La Havas. Live, her authentic songs about her path on the road to self-discovery and spirituality are given added weight by a full band with background singers, which elevates her concerts to the rank of theatrical ceremonies of reflection and connection.
