Catherine Graindorge at Gent Jazz

The first achievement of violinist and composer Catherine Graindorge dates back as far as 2007 when she started psychedelic post-rock trio Nile On waX (NOX). At the time, the Brussels-native’s violin playing was marked out as the major trump card in the band’s sound, which gave the enigmatic violinist the moral support she needed to enable her to develop her own artistry. In 2012, Graindorge released her first solo album entitled 'The Secret of us all’. The album met with rave reviews and put the Brussels musician in touch with artists such as Hugo Race (The Bad Seeds), Nick Cave, Warren Ellis, Bertrand Cantat, Mark Lanegan and John Parish (PJ Harvey). Working with the latter, she put out 'Eldorado’ in 2021, which not only saw Parish handle production duties but also play on the album. The result is a dark, brooding soundtrack that invokes intense motions with every spin. In response, the domestic and foreign press broke out the tin with superlatives to heap praise on her work.

It is hardly surprising then that her music is often described as 'cinematic’ as, alongside her personal compositions and songs for NOX, Graindorge has also been responsible for a raft of soundtracks for dance and theatrical performances and films. Her soundtrack for 'Le Chant des Hommes’ was even nominated for a Magritte, Wallonia’s main film awards. At Gent Jazz, Graindorge will be playing her deep-going compositions with help from harmonium player Simon Hu. Who knows, her set list may well include tunes from 'The Dictator’, an EP she released least year with none other than Iggy Pop.
