Noah Vanden Abeele at Gent Jazz
There are few pianists in this genre who manage to put across a feeling in this way, who are able to elicit so much imagery and who, in doing so, can cause a heart to melt.” This is what Belgian weekly Knack Focus wrote about 'Universe’, pianist Noah Vanden Abeele’s first album. In 2018, the Ronse native won over lovers of solo piano music with his serene, neo-classical compositions. On that record, Vanden Abeele showcases his conservatory degree. The songs were written according to the rules of the art and yet never felt (read that Knack quote again) empty or uninspired. It would be easy to compare him to Ludovico Einaudi - the other piano 'hero’ on the bill.
After his first album was released, Vanden Abeele himself admitted that he was missing something. On his second record he went for radical freedom. In his compositions, his style of playing but equally in the leeway he gave himself. 'Horizon’ sees the pianist literally explore new horizons by adding strings and by incorporating analogue synths, an old love of his, in his music. Finally, there is also the addition of the most fragile of instruments, his own voice. These interventions ensure that 'Horizon’ is more dynamic, more layered and consequently even more compelling, but also and especially make the album feel a lot more personal. There is also greater closeness, almost intimacy between the artist and the listener, something which Vanden Abeele was deliberately after. At Gent Jazz, he will be seeking to build this closeness with the audience on the friendly Garden Stage.
