schroothoop at Gent Jazz

Group names can sometimes be needlessly tricky or confusing. Not so with Schroothoop, which translates as 'scrapheap’). The connection between the name of this jazz junk trio and what they do is clear: they make amazing music on home-made instruments, created from items they find on the streets of Brussels. PVC pipes become flutes, paint cans become drums and a washing line becomes a double bass. Nothing is beyond the realms of imagination for multi-instrumentalists Rik Staelens, Margo Maex and Timo Vantyghem. Or as one reviewer said: "This trio understands the unique art of perfectly connecting different cultures using musical instruments made of waste products. The result will take your breath away.”

With their music, this trio aims to represent the diversity of Brussels. They succeed in uniting North American Chaabi, jazz, reggaeton, Eastern influences and Afro-Cuban rhythms to create a danceable, hypnotic trip through the melting pot which makes our city unique in the world. And their success was proven by their first release 'Klein Gevaarlijk Afval’ in 2020. Its successor 'MACADAM’ was released in April 2023 and offered a more evolved sound where electronics also surfaced and the raw, ripping yet sultry sound was further cranked up by effects pedals. The trio has already been welcomed by Rewire, STUK, Leffingeleuren, AMOK, Recyclart and Les Ateliers Claus. This will be their second outing at Gent Jazz. Have faith in junk!
