After two memorable appearances in 2015 and 2019, Gregory Porter is set to stage a return to Gent Jazz! The soulful crooner with the unforgettable baritone and engaging personality definitely qualifies as a true jazz sensation. In 2010, he amazed listeners with his debut album 'Water’ - which saw him pocket a Grammy nomination - but the real breakthrough came with 'Liquid Spirit’ (2013), released on the legendary Blue Note Records, which saw him take home a Grammy for best jazz vocal album and notch up unprecedented sales and streaming figures for a jazz album. He subsequently went on to disabuse people of the notion that this was a lucky shot with the follow-up releases 'Take Me To The Alley’ (2016) and 'All Rise’ (2020). In between these albums he managed to pay tribute to the great Nat King Cole - his main role model - with a delightful album packed with his own interpretations of Cole classics.
Wynton Marsalis’ protégé not only stands out in a musical sense with his genre-busting songs that sit at the crossroads of jazz, soul, blues and gospel but, also manages to captivate audiences with heartfelt, emotionally charged lyrics, delivered in a warm, imposing vocal that allows him to sound fragile and intimate yet at the same time big and powerful. Porter plays the world’s biggest festivals (Glastonbury, North Sea Jazz, Lowlands, Montreux, etc.) selling out impressive concert halls (Ziggo Dome, Royal Albert Hall, etc.). "Pure magic” was how Flemish newspaper De Morgen described one of Porter’s previous shows at Gent Jazz. We are convinced that his upcoming appearance will be every bit as magical.
