Kristo at Gent Jazz

To many, singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Kristiaan Deruytter - a.k.a. Kristo - is no longer an unknown quantity. The son of legendary saxophonist Frank Deruytter and a mother who teaches the marimba and the vibraphone, he grew up in a very musical family. It soon became clear that music was to be his big passion too. As a child he was very determined; he would forge his own path, at any cost. In his childhood, he received classical music training before largely spending his teenage years experimenting with various bands. Recent years saw him serving as the singer-guitarist for pop-funk trio Savoir-Vivre with whom he put out two EPs and a handful of singles. In addition, he was a welcome guesting musician with OTOmachine, the funky, fifteen-strong big band directed by his own dad. He recently graduated from the renowned Codarts Rotterdam University of the Arts.

Deruytter’s quest for his own musical identity is still ongoing but is already bearing very exciting fruits in the guise of Kristo. On 'Restore’, the EP which Kristo released last year under his own steam, being a multi-instrumentalist, he not only played all of the instruments, he also handled production duties. This resulted in poignant, authentic songs - sometimes subdued and pure, sometimes exhilarating and funky. A major strong suit of these first recordings has to be his soulful vocal delivery. Live too, Kristo is certain to effortlessly enrapture audiences with the able assistance of bassist Erik Rademakers (Selah Sue, OTO Machine) and drummer Wout Helsen (Jaouad, EigenZweetStinkt).
