The Ghent band Stadlander, formed around pianist Stijn Engels, makes music that seeks calm and exudes vitality. Along with Bruno Van der Haeghen (tenor sax), Kris Auman (double bass) and Stijn Demuynck (drums), Engels forms a quartet which effortlessly balances emotion and introspection. The starting point for 'Shelter’, their second album, is the overwhelmingly positive power of nature - as a place to relax, re-energise and find inspiration. The familiar features of Stadlander, including narrative melodies, haunting harmonies and tight interactions, focus the audience's attention on their quest for inner peace, without pinning down expectations.
